**PROGRAMS FOR STRUGGLING MATH STUDENTS**

**Learning Upgrade**: Online multimedia tutorial program (basic math, pre-algebra, algebra) from a creative team of teachers, musicians, artists and programmers in San Diego, California, USA. Featuring songs, video, animation and games to help each student achieve breakthrough learning. Used by over 300,000 students since 1998, including struggling readers, special needs students and English learners. Incorporates the latest ed research, curriculum standards, assessment and progress tracking. FREE SUMMER SCHOOL SUBSCRIPTION for K-12 SCHOOLS. Free trial. Individuals: $50. per 6 months, for 1 course. Schools: $30 per student per year, unlimited courses. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Excellent motivation and organization.

**Jump Math**** **was developed by John Mighton at the University of Toronto. His method takes the even the most math resistant learners and turns them into confident successes. Watch his videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/JumpMath/videosNYT Article on Jump Math Success (4-18-2011)

Dybuster: multi-sensory, computer-based therapy for dyslexia and dyscalculia. Calcularis promotes development and coordination of brain areas responsible for processing numbers, quantities, and math calculations. Calcularis for Grade 1 to adults. Developed in collaboration with neuroscientists and computer scientists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.

**SHAPE MATH:** Learn math basics without memorization, using geometric shapes and logical patterns: addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, fractions, money, & time. Shape Math® is a revolutionary technique for doing written and mental math problems. It uses a series of shapes that fit in logical patterns that make a geometric representation of the Base 10 number system. It allows students to do mental problems into the hundreds, divide without times tables, and visually and conceptually understand abstract concepts. Instead of thinking about how two numbers *add* together, the student thinks about how two numbers *fit *together.

Shape Math® was designed by Michael Cornell, a dyslexic who is also dyscalculic.

**Making Math Real**** (MMR) **is a multisensory program developed by Dr. David Berg. Classes for educators are) offered through the University of California-Berkley Extension. The Making Math Real Institute offers training in Berg's Making Math Real Multisensory Structured Methodologies in Mathematics, K-12. The** MMR Institute** offers courses like (1) Developing Automaticity with the Multiplication and Division Facts: The 9 Lines Multiplication Fact Acquisition and Application Strategy; (2) Fractions, Decimals & Advanced Place Value - The Three Essentials of Algebra Readiness. All use hands-on methods for the acquisition, mastery, and application of mathematical knowledge. MMR curriculum is appropriate for K-12 through Calculus.* Established in 1996. This training is primarily for educators. *

**ALEKS.COM Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS) **

is a Web-based, artificial intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't know in a course. ALEKS then iinstructs the

student on the topics they're most ready to learn. ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to assure retention. ALEKS courses are complete in scope and avoid multiple-choice questions. ALEKS provides one-on-one instruction, 24/7, from virtually any Web-based computer for a fraction of the cost of a human tutor.

**Note that students with severe dyscalculia have experienced frustration with ALEKS because retrieval disability interferes with performance on periodic review assessments. The pie gets reset and gains disappear. Poor intermittent and inconsistent retrieval of learned ideas is a hallmark of dyscalculia. *

**Karismath.com** is a system of visual math lessons that teach basic math concepts through algebra visually and intuitively. It was developed by dyscalculia expert and Harvard psychologist, Shad Moraif and his team of Universal Design for Learning Experts. The approach takes learners through CLSO: Concepts presented visually, with emphasis on the Language of mathematics, then the Symbols used to represent the ideas, and lastly, the Operations used to solve problems. The program builds math fluency by firmly establishing understanding and reasoning abilities.

**Dynamo Maths**:

Dynamo Maths is a three-stage online remediation program for dyscalculics. The multisensory program adapts instruction to learner's needs. It is based on brain research on math learning and addresses Learning Disorders and poor working memory. Age 4-11+. Over 230 online activities and supports like Teacher Class/Parent Activity Plans, Printable Worksheets, and Progress Reports & Certificates for personalized learning. All activities are mapped to the National Curriculum and the 21 Dyscalculia Difficulties. Source: United Kingdom.

**Dreambox Learning** is a remedial math software program for elementary and middle school content. It uses adaptive instruction that assesses, prescribes, and ensures students experience success and mastery before introducing next topics in a common core curriculum (USA & Canada). iPad and Online. Schools & Individual Subscriptions. Award-winning. Data tracking & reporting.

Fun & Engaging. Free trial. $13/ to $10./ month for an individual subscription.

Has a great track record for quickly closing skill gaps.

Usually completed in five days. Does not use manipulatives, memorization tricks, flashcards, or repetition. Rationale: Visual-spatial thinkers are easily confused by the "words" that describe math functions and experience regular disorientation of perception that impedes their ability to grasp concepts of time and sequence, and thus order vs. disorder. The Davis Method develops one's control of disorientation and sense of time and sequence, enabling the student to "see" math functions and easily learn and understand math.

*Dyscalculic students usually LACK the ability to visually imagine and mentally manipulate numbers, images, and quantitative ideas. The Davis Method is appropriate for dyslexics, but may not succeed with dyscalculics.
